CHAPTER 10

The tall man stepped off a routine military flight between Sigonella air base and Croatia two days later. He found himself on the one extraordinarily long runway at Udbina airport. It was in a wide, flat valley not far from a village of the same name.

The airport had been built to military specifications, with the help of US money. Special forces had already used it a number of times in their operations around the world.

Maric could see Udbina village on a low rise to the west. It was something of an historic site, and housed 1500 people. On the other side of the airport a number of ranges marched, ever more aggressively, toward the Serbian border. Udbina was inland from the busy port of Zadar, and out of the way, a great place for a special forces base.

A number of military personnel got off the plane at the same time as Maric. He figured they were here for the same reason he was. The last few days of training for the new Croatian special forces unit, and then its graduation. There was everything from a Major to a Brigadier General among the military personnel, and they looked smart in dress uniform.

Maric was dressed in civvies. He’d thrown his regulation major uniform in a suitcase, but he didn't think it would be getting much use. He wasn't here to represent his country by standing on a platform and taking salutes. He was here to get down and dirty with the best soldiers the Croatian military had to offer. He was here to see if they had what it took to be special force.

Much of the training had taken place further inland, in the wilds surrounding Ozeblin Mountain. That was where Maric was headed.

Two late-model sedans turned up after a while, and spirited the other officers away toward the village. Maric waited until a weather-beaten Humvee with no armor and no sign of attached firepower rolled to a stop beside him.

He got in without comment, and the driver turned toward the ranges and climbed up out of the valley. In an hour and a half Maric was at the special forces training base.

He thanked the driver, who snapped off a smart salute, and made his way up the steps to the admin office. The clerk behind the desk looked at him as if he was lost, which wasn’t surprising since he was out of uniform.

"Major Maric to see Sergeant Major Josip Yukovic," he said. The clerk looked surprised, but true to his military training he adapted quickly to the situation.

"Take a seat, Major," he said, "while I find the Sergeant Major. I'm not sure he’s on the base at the moment, there’s been a lot of activity around here lately."

Maric smiled. Special forces training certainly qualified as ‘a lot of activity’.

He took the proffered seat and waited. It wasn’t long before he found he was in luck. Sergeant Major Yukovic was in his office, catching up on paperwork. The special forces
